Global nuclear energy generation is set to achieve a record high in 2025, according to the latest World Nuclear Outlook Report, which paints an increasingly optimistic picture of the sector's trajectory over the coming decades. The report, authored by analyst Jonathan Cobb, was recently discussed in detail on the World Nuclear News podcast, where Cobb walked through the findings and their implications for global energy policy.

The report identifies several key drivers behind this surge in nuclear output. Asian nations, particularly China and India, have been at the forefront of new reactor construction, adding significant baseload capacity to their energy grids. Meanwhile, existing reactors across Europe and North America have benefited from lifecycle extensions and upgraded systems that have improved both safety margins and electricity output.

Among its policy recommendations, the report urges governments to streamline regulatory approval processes for new plants, offer long-term revenue stability mechanisms such as contracts for difference, and invest heavily in next-generation reactor designs including small modular reactors (SMRs). Cobb emphasised that the window for meeting climate goals is narrowing, and nuclear energy's role as a reliable, low-carbon source of electricity makes it indispensable alongside renewables.
