A woman police constable in Amritsar sustained injuries after being assaulted by a group of Nihang Sikhs on Monday evening, following her attempt to rescue a man who was being harassed by the protesters. The incident unfolded on Jhabal Road in Amritsar, where a section of Nihang Sikhs had staged a blockade and sit-in protest over an unresolved grievance.
According to police sources, the situation escalated when a man was spotted near the protest site. A group of Nihangs allegedly targeted him, prompting the woman constable, who was part of the police contingent managing the crowd, to step in and try to save him from their clutches. In retaliation for her intervention, several Nihangs turned their aggression toward her, beating her severely on the spot.
Another Nihang arrived on a motorcycle at the scene during the commotion, adding to the chaotic atmosphere. The police team present managed to extract the injured woman constable from the crowd and shifted her to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her condition has been described as stable but serious, with injuries primarily to her head and upper body.
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from local political leaders and civic organizations, who criticized the assault on a law enforcement official, particularly a woman officer. Senior police officials have registered a case against the unidentified assailants and launched a manhunt for those involved in the attack.
Nihang Sikhs are a sect known for their militant posture and have been involved in numerous protests across Punjab over the years, often resorting to blockades and road disruptions to press their demands. Local administration in Amritsar has long grappled with balancing the right to protest and the enforcement of public order.
Police have appealed to the public to avoid the area and urged anyone with information about the attackers to come forward. An inquiry has also been ordered into the conduct of the officers deployed at the site to assess whether adequate precautions were taken.
