V.O. Chidambaranar Port, commonly referred to as V.O.C. Port, located in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, has achieved a significant milestone in its operational history by accommodating a container vessel measuring 335.23 metres in length. The arrival of such a massive ship represents the largest vessel the port has ever received and sets a new benchmark for cargo handling capacity at this important southern Indian seaport.
The successful berthing of the super-large container ship comes after a dedicated series of marine infrastructure and navigational improvements undertaken by port authorities over recent years. These upgrades were specifically designed to deepen berths, widen turning basins, and enhance channel navigation to allow larger vessels to safely enter and exit the port waters.
Port officials confirmed that all safety protocols were strictly followed during the vessel's arrival and departure. The container ship was assisted by tugs and pilots through the approaches, and standard loading and unloading operations proceeded without any reported incidents or delays.
V.O.C. Port has been actively pursuing growth strategies to position itself as a key transshipment hub connecting India with global shipping routes through the Bay of Bengal. The ability to host ultra-large container vessels significantly enhances the port's competitiveness against other major terminals in the region, including those in Chennai and Kochi.
