Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate Semiconductor India 2026 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in Delhi on Wednesday, marking the fifth edition of one of Asia's most significant gatherings for the semiconductor and electronics industry. The three-day event, running from September 17 to 19, carries the theme "Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem," signalling a strategic shift from merely attracting fabrication plants to developing a comprehensive value chain spanning design, packaging, testing, and end-product manufacturing.
Organisers say approximately 600 companies from 52 countries will participate in the conference and exhibition, making it the largest such gathering hosted in India to date. Alongside semiconductor firms, the event welcomes investors, policymakers, researchers, startup founders, educators, and students from across the technology landscape. After the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister is expected to address the assembly, outlining the government's vision for deepening India's participation in global chip supply chains.
A special attraction of the exhibition is the "Sand to Silicon to Systems" pavilion, which will walk visitors through the entire semiconductor fabrication journey — from raw silicon extracted from sand, through wafer processing and lithography, to finished chip assemblies ready for use in electronics. Industry insiders say the display is designed to demystify the complex manufacturing pipeline and highlight the skill sets and infrastructure India will need to sustain it.
The event arrives at a critical juncture for India's electronics ambitions. The central government has rolled out a ₹4,891-crore production-linked incentive scheme for the semiconductor and electronic component sector, and several major announcements — including manufacturing commitments from firms like Tata Electronics and Micron Technology — have already placed India on the global map. However, experts caution that moving beyond individual factories to build a self-sustaining ecosystem requires coordinated investment in engineering education, research and development centres, and component-level manufacturing capabilities.
State governments are also competing to attract semiconductor-related projects, offering their own incentive packages alongside the central scheme. Industry participants at the event are expected to discuss these developments and explore partnership opportunities across the value chain.
