Kratom, a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia whose leaves contain psychoactive compounds, has become an unlikely subject of consumer-safety concern in India — not because of widespread use, but because of the near-total absence of regulation around how its products are labeled, sold, and monitored.
Products containing kratom extracts, powders, capsules, and tea blends are increasingly visible on e-commerce platforms and in certain retail stores across major Indian cities. Yet buyers often have no way of knowing exactly what the product contains. Unlike food supplements, packaged foods, or pharmaceuticals, kratom products are not required to display standardized ingredient lists, dosage instructions, or warnings on their packaging. A shopper picking up a capsule bottle may never see details comparable to what appears on a bottle of cold medicine or an energy drink — no mention of alkaloid concentrations, no manufacturing dates, no adverse-effect disclaimers.
This labeling gap sits at the heart of a larger regulatory limbo. In October 2018, the Central Government of India issued a notification under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, banning the manufacture, sale, and distribution of drugs containing mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine — the primary psychoactive alkaloids found in kratom. The notification effectively placed those specific compounds under strict control. However, the legal status of the raw leaf, powder, and extracts remains contested, and enforcement has been uneven. Many state drug-control authorities have not issued explicit circulars clarifying whether kratom products fall entirely outside the law or merely fall under an incomplete regulatory framework.
Consumer advocates and public-health experts argue that the lack of a clear policy creates real danger. Without mandatory labels, consumers cannot assess dosage, identify contaminants, or understand potential interactions with other medications. The absence of post-market surveillance means there is no systematic mechanism for tracking adverse reactions, even though case reports from other countries link kratom use to liver injury, dependence, and gastrointestinal problems.
The question now is not just whether kratom should be allowed, but whether any authority is actively monitoring the products already in consumers' hands. Until India establishes a coherent framework — one that defines kratom's legal status, requires transparent labeling, and assigns responsibility for safety assessment — the burden of figuring out whether a product is safe will continue to fall on the buyer alone.
