Kerala, long considered one of India's dengue hotspots, may soon see the disease spread far beyond its traditional boundaries as climate change reshapes the ecological conditions that allow Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to thrive. Scientists tracking the intersection of global warming and vector-borne diseases say the south Indian state is now experiencing a perfect storm: rising average temperatures, longer and more intense pre-monsoon heatwaves, and increasingly erratic rainfall — all of which accelerate mosquito breeding cycles and extend the disease transmission season well outside its historical window.

In recent years, Kerala has recorded some of the highest dengue case counts in the country. The 2023 and 2024 monsoon seasons saw thousands of confirmed cases across districts that previously reported little or no dengue activity. Experts attribute this expansion to changing microclimates that now support mosquito populations in higher-altitude regions and areas that were once too cool for sustained Aedes survival.

The mechanism is straightforward but alarming. Aedes mosquitoes reproduce fastest in standing water at temperatures between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius. Warmer conditions shorten the time it takes for the dengue virus to incubate inside the mosquito, meaning infected bites become more likely to transmit the disease. Erratic monsoon patterns leave behind more fragmented pools of stagnant water — ideal breeding sites — while also disrupting public health planning that relied on predictable seasonal windows.

Public health officials in Kerala have responded by strengthening surveillance networks, increasing fogging drives, and running public awareness campaigns. But researchers caution that without addressing the underlying climate drivers, these measures will remain reactive rather than preventive. Several studies published in the past three years project that dengue incidence in southern India could increase by 30 to 50 percent by 2050 under current warming trajectories, with Kerala among the hardest hit.

The broader implication extends beyond Kerala itself. As neighboring states such as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also experience rising dengue reports, researchers warn that India as a whole is entering a new epidemiological era where climate-driven disease expansion will demand coordinated national preparedness rather than state-by-state crisis management.
