India is accelerating its search for reliable uranium fuel supplies as the government moves forward with an ambitious expansion of its nuclear energy programme. The push comes after new domestic regulations were enacted allowing private companies to participate in building and operating nuclear power plants — a landmark shift that is expected to dramatically increase demand for enriched uranium across the country.

Senior officials confirmed that India has been actively negotiating supply agreements with several countries, including Uzbekistan, Australia, and Canada. Each partnership offers distinct advantages: Australia holds some of the world's largest known uranium deposits, Uzbekistan has established export capacity, and Canada brings technical expertise through its longstanding civil nuclear cooperation framework with India. These agreements are seen as critical to fueling not only existing reactors but also several new plants currently under construction or planned for the coming decade.

The legislative change opening the sector to private investment was part of a broader package of reforms aimed at modernising India's nuclear architecture. Previously restricted to state-run entities such as the Atomic Energy Commission and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, the sector now permits qualified private firms to set up nuclear projects, operate reactors, and enter into fuel supply contracts under regulatory oversight. Industry analysts estimate that these changes could bring thousands of crores of rupees in investment and significantly boost India's installed nuclear capacity, which currently accounts for roughly three per cent of the nation's total electricity generation.

Alongside the uranium rush, India continues to develop its homegrown three-stage nuclear programme, designed ultimately to rely on thorium — a resource the country possesses in large quantities — rather than imported uranium. The second stage fast breeder reactors are being built at Kalpakkam and others, intended to breed plutonium fuel from natural uranium before the eventual transition to thorium-based reactors. Experts note that while full commercial deployment of thorium reactors remains years away, sustained investment in uranium imports ensures India can meet its near-term energy goals while the technology matures.

Critics have raised concerns about environmental risks and the pace of regulatory readiness for private participation, but the government maintains that nuclear energy is essential for achieving its climate commitments and energy security targets.
