An international symposium on Artificial Intelligence was held in Vellore this week, bringing together a diverse group of researchers, engineers, policymakers, and industry professionals under one roof to discuss the rapid evolution of AI technologies and their implications for India and the global community.
The event, hosted at the Vellore Institute of Technology campus, featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, technical presentations, and interactive workshops spanning topics such as machine learning advancements, responsible AI deployment, healthcare diagnostics powered by algorithms, autonomous systems, and the future of work in an AI-driven economy.
Organisers said the symposium saw participation from over 300 attendees, including faculty members and doctoral scholars from leading engineering and science institutions across India, alongside delegates from several foreign universities and representatives from technology companies actively building AI products in the country.
The opening session emphasised the urgent need for India to invest in indigenous AI research while simultaneously establishing robust ethical guardrails. Speakers highlighted that while Indian startups and research labs have made significant contributions to natural language processing, computer vision, and agritech applications of AI, there remains a critical gap in foundational model development compared to global leaders.
A recurring theme throughout the two-day event was the concern around the digital divide. Several panelists argued that without deliberate policy intervention, the benefits of AI could remain concentrated among well-resourced institutions and urban populations, leaving smaller towns and rural communities further behind.
Industry representatives who participated in a dedicated session on AI and employment noted that automation and AI are already reshaping sectors such as banking, manufacturing, and customer service. They called for large-scale reskilling programmes and closer collaboration between academia and industry to ensure the workforce of tomorrow is prepared.
The symposium also included a workshop on generative AI tools, where participants explored practical applications for education, content creation, and administrative efficiency. Several papers were presented on recent research from VIT and partner institutions, including work on low-resource language processing for Indian languages and AI-based early warning systems for crop disease detection.
In his closing remarks, the event convener stressed that the dialogue initiated at the symposium must translate into sustained action — through curriculum reform, increased research funding, and policy frameworks that balance innovation with accountability.
The conference concluded with the announcement of a proposed annual AI symposium series in Vellore, aiming to make it a recurring platform for interdisciplinary exchange on artificial intelligence in the Indian context.
