Mitsui E&S Corporation, a leading Japanese engineering and shipbuilding company, has successfully completed sea trials of its newly developed high-precision ship thrust measurement system aboard the VLCC (Very Large Crude Oil Carrier) ENEOS DREAM. The trial vessel, registered with a deadweight tonnage of 312,167 DWT, represents one of the largest class of crude oil tankers in global maritime trade.
The thrust measurement system, developed in-house by Mitsui E&S, is designed to accurately capture and analyze the propulsive forces generated by a ship's propulsion system during real-world sailing conditions. By precisely measuring thrust output, the technology enables ship operators and engineers to optimize engine performance, reduce fuel consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions from maritime vessels.
Sea trials are a critical phase in the validation of any new marine technology. During the trials conducted by the ENEOS DREAM, the system was tested under varying operational conditions including different speeds, load scenarios, and sea states. The data collected will be used to refine the measurement algorithms and ensure the system delivers reliable readings across the full range of a tanker's operating envelope.
Mitsui E&S has long been involved in the development of energy-efficient ship technologies as the global shipping industry faces increasing regulatory pressure to reduce carbon intensity. International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, including the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) frameworks, have pushed shipowners and operators to adopt technologies that improve fuel efficiency and cut emissions.
Industry analysts note that accurate thrust measurement is particularly valuable for large crude carriers like the ENEOS DREAM, which consume vast quantities of fuel on long-haul voyages between major oil-producing regions and global refining hubs. Even marginal improvements in propulsion efficiency can translate into substantial cost savings and emission reductions over the lifetime of such vessels.
The successful completion of these sea trials positions Mitsui E&S to offer the thrust measurement system as part of its broader suite of green shipping technologies. The company is expected to pursue further commercial deployments on additional vessels in the coming months.
