Guwahati, Assam — Ramanuj Goswami, a man accused of the brutal murder of his wife in which he allegedly severed her head and stored it inside a refrigerator, died on Monday morning after he attempted to flee while in police custody. The incident occurred en route to a hospital when his police van suffered a tire puncture, creating an opportunity for him to make a desperate escape attempt.
According to police sources, Goswami was being taken for a medical examination following his arrest in connection with the gruesome crime. During the transit, the police van's tire was found to have punctured near a stretch outside the city. Seizing the moment, Goswami, despite being handcuffed, managed to jump out of the moving vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. In his haste, he fell into a deep ditch or pothole and sustained serious injuries.
He was promptly rescued by the police party and rushed to a nearby hospital. However, despite prolonged efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries by afternoon. Authorities confirmed that his death occurred during medical treatment and not directly at the point of the fall.
The case had initially stunned residents of Guwahati when Goswami's wife was found dead under horrific circumstances. Reports indicated that her severed head had been discovered inside a household refrigerator, leading to widespread shock across the city. The accused was promptly taken into custody and charged with murder.
Assam Police has stated that an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death in custody will be conducted, as is standard procedure in such incidents. Officials have not yet released details about whether any officer involved in the transport will face disciplinary action.
