Actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood has sparked online conversation by criticising Apple's launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in India, saying that the real upgrade the country needs is not a smartphone but a better society.
Sood shared his views on social media on September 18, the same day the new iPhones went on sale across India. In his post, he contrasted the luxury pricing and marketing hype surrounding the latest device with the everyday struggles faced by millions of Indians. His comments quickly gained traction, drawing both support and backlash from netizens.
Sood is widely recognised for his charitable work, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 when he set up a helpline that helped thousands of migrant workers, students, and stranded travellers return home. Since then, he has continued to speak out on issues of poverty, healthcare access, and social welfare.
The iPhone 18 series was launched globally earlier in 2025, with the Pro models positioned as premium devices featuring advanced camera systems, improved battery life, and new AI capabilities. Apple's Indian pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max placed them firmly in the luxury segment, making them inaccessible for most of the population despite growing smartphone penetration across the country.
Sood's remarks have reignited a longstanding debate about consumerism versus social responsibility in India. Critics of his statement argued that technology drives economic growth and creates employment, while supporters said his message highlights the stark inequality that persists even as premium gadgets become more available.
Apple has not yet responded publicly to Sood's comments. The company continues to expand its retail presence in India, opening new stores and strengthening its online sales channels as demand for premium smartphones rises among India's growing middle class.
