Lucknow — The Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Service Selection Commission (UPSSSC) has officially released the comprehensive exam pattern and syllabus for the UP Pre-Employment Test (PET), a single-window examination that has become the primary eligibility criterion for recruitment to a wide range of government posts in the state. The announcement comes as thousands of aspirants prepare for upcoming notifications tied to the PET scorecard.
The UP PET is conducted by UPSSSC as a qualifying merit-based test for shortlisting candidates for various Group C and Group D posts under the state government. Posts such as Lower Division Clerk, Senior Clerk, Junior Assistant, Stenographer, Inspector of Excise, Vets, Lab Technician, and various other subordinate services require a valid PET score for consideration.
According to the official notification, the PET will be conducted in an objective-type multiple-choice format, lasting two hours, with a total of 120 questions carrying a combined marking of 120 marks. There is no negative marking for incorrect responses, a detail that many candidates should note while planning their attempt strategy.
The syllabus is divided into four major sections. The General Hindi section carries 25 marks and tests comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and sentence correction abilities at the intermediate level. The General Studies and Current Affairs segment accounts for 35 marks, covering Indian polity, history, geography, economics, and recent national and Uttar Pradesh-specific developments.
The General Mental Ability and Numerical Aptitude section carries 35 marks and includes topics such as number systems, percentages, ratios, simple interest, time and work, distance problems, and data interpretation. The General Vigyan and Environment section completes the paper with 25 marks, focusing on basic science concepts at the middle-school level, environmental awareness, and everyday scientific observations relevant to common life situations.
Candidates are advised to refer to the official UPSSSC website for the full detailed syllabus document, as minor topic-wise additions may have been communicated through separate circulars. The commission has also clarified that the PET score will remain valid for recruitment purposes for a specified period, allowing candidates to apply across multiple notifications without retaking the exam.
With lakhs of applicants expected to appear for each cycle, UP PET continues to be one of the most competitive state-level examinations in India, shaping career pathways for youth across Uttar Pradesh.
