Religious sentiments across Kerala have been ruffled after a video and photographs surfaced showing four young tourists climbing a prominent cross situated near Pallivasal, close to Munnar in the Idukki district, and striking casual poses for social media pictures. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from local church groups and community organisations, who have described the act as deeply disrespectful to Christian faith and traditions.
The cross in question is located along a busy stretch near Pallivasal, a popular halting point for travellers en route to Munnar's tea gardens and hill stations. It serves not only as a spiritual landmark but also as a reminder of the region's long-standing Christian heritage, particularly its Syrian Christian roots that date back centuries.
Church authorities in the Idukki diocese filed a formal complaint with the Munnar police station, demanding that strict action be taken under applicable provisions of law against the individuals involved. The complaint emphasised that the cross is a sacred symbol and that treating it casually undermines the religious sentiments of millions of Christians in the state.
Local resident groups and parish councils have also voiced their anger, with several community leaders organising protests online and calling for the offenders to be booked under laws protecting religious feelings. Some civil society members have argued that while tourism drives economic growth, visitors must be expected to respect local customs and sacred spaces.
The Munnar police have acknowledged receipt of the complaint and confirmed that an inquiry is underway to identify the individuals featured in the photographs. Officials said they are examining the footage and coordinating with local bodies to trace the tourists' identities. No arrests have been reported so far, and police have asked the public to refrain from sharing unverified information online.
