Authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district have registered a first information report following the discovery of a massive fraud scheme that duped roughly 4,000 individuals under the guise of a legitimate government job recruitment process. The victims, many of whom were eager job seekers from rural and semi-urban areas, were promised secure employment in various government departments after paying substantial fees through the fraudulent channel.
According to initial investigations, the accused set up a fake recruitment portal and widely circulated advertisements claiming to conduct selections for multiple vacant positions across state government bodies. The scammers reportedly charged aspirants anywhere between several thousand to tens of thousands of rupees as processing or registration fees, assuring them of appointment letters and interview calls within a stipulated timeframe.
The scheme appears to have operated through a network of local agents who collected money on behalf of the main operators, making it difficult for law enforcement to trace the full extent of the operation. Victims included young graduates, diploma holders, and even individuals with professional qualifications who had been actively seeking stable government employment. Many came from economically weaker sections of society and invested their life savings or borrowed money to participate in what they believed was an official selection process.
The complaint that triggered the FIR is said to have emerged after a group of affected individuals approached the local police station after realising that no interviews or selection processes were ever conducted and no official notifications had been issued by any government department. The state government's recruitment notifications, which can be verified on official portals, show no such drive was ever advertised or approved by competent authority in Ballia or elsewhere in the state.
Police have begun identifying the accused and are likely to conduct searches at multiple locations linked to the operation. Officials have warned the public to only apply through officially recognised channels and to verify any recruitment advertisement against government websites before parting with money.
