The landscape of teacher recruitment in India saw significant movement throughout 2024, with numerous state education departments and central recruiting bodies rolling out updated selection processes for teaching positions at the primary, secondary, and senior secondary levels. The drive comes as schools across the country continue to face vacancies that have lingered from previous years, prompting governments to accelerate hiring to meet the growing demand for qualified educators.
At the centre, the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), remains the gateway qualification for teaching posts in central government schools and many private institutions. The 2024 cycle saw multiple rounds of the exam, with results declared for candidates who appeared throughout the year. Eligible candidates receive certificates valid for seven years, opening doors to recruitment notifications issued by various states and union territories.
Several states issued fresh recruitment drives during 2024. Uttar Pradesh, home to one of the largest teacher recruitment ecosystems in the country, continued processing applications and conducting exams under its various education department notifications. Bihar also moved forward with its teacher recruitment process, updating eligibility criteria and exam schedules. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra were among other states that released fresh notifications or updated existing ones for recruitment to post of PRT, TGT, and PGT positions in government and government-aided schools.
Recruitment typically follows a structured selection process beginning with a written examination administered by state-level bodies such as the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC), Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BPSSC), or state education departments themselves. Shortlisted candidates then proceed to document verification and, in some cases, demonstration classes or interviews. The entire cycle — from notification release to final appointment — often spans several months due to the sheer volume of applicants.
Education experts note that the 2024 recruitment drives are particularly significant because they follow periods of pandemic-related disruption that left many teaching positions unfilled for extended stretches. Governments have emphasised clearing long-pending vacancies to ensure adequate staffing in classrooms nationwide.
