The Tamil Nadu State Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) department has initiated one of its largest recruitment exercises in recent years, advertising 7,783 positions for Anganwadi Workers, Mini Workers, and Helpers across the state. The notification, released in early April 2025, invites eligible candidates to submit their applications through the official ICDS portal before the deadline of April 23.
Anganwadi centres form the backbone of India's early childhood care and nutrition programme under the Ministry of Women and Child Development. In Tamil Nadu alone, over 40,000 Anganwadi centres operate across urban and rural pockets, serving millions of children below six years of age, pregnant women, and lactating mothers with supplementary nutrition, pre-school education, and basic health check-ups. The new vacancies will strengthen staffing at these centres, which have faced chronic shortages of human resources in several districts.
Under the current notification, 7,783 posts are being filled under three distinct roles. The Worker position is the primary frontline post responsible for direct community outreach, nutrition distribution, and health monitoring. Mini Workers assist Workers in anganwadi operations and typically handle auxiliary duties during peak hours or when a full-time Worker is unavailable. Helpers provide logistical and support assistance within the centres, including maintenance, cooking support, and material management.
Eligibility criteria require candidates to have passed at least the 10th standard or equivalent from a recognized board for the Worker and Mini Worker posts, while the Helper category generally mandates an 8th-standard pass. Lower-caste reservations will apply as per Tamil Nadu's existing policy framework, with separate merit lists prepared for general, Backward Class, Most Backward Class, and Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe categories.
The application process is entirely online. Candidates must register on the ICDS recruitment portal, fill in personal and educational details, upload required documents, and pay the applicable fee. Applications submitted after the April 23 cutoff will not be entertained. Shortlisted candidates will be called for document verification followed by selection based on merit.
This recruitment drive follows years of demands from anganwadi staff associations and legislative calls for filling long-vacant positions. Many centres in districts such as Dindigul, Virudhunagar, and Sivagangai had reported functioning with inadequate staff, prompting the state government to fast-track this hiring exercise.
