A large-scale cross-sectional study conducted across several provinces in southern Morocco has shed new light on the persistent burden of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), revealing that the condition remains alarmingly common among some of the region's most vulnerable populations.

Published in September 2026, the research was carried out by a team of public health specialists who examined hemoglobin levels, dietary patterns, and socioeconomic indicators across urban and rural communities in the Souss-Massa and Guelmim-Oued Noun regions. The findings confirm that iron deficiency anemia — long recognized as the most prevalent nutritional disorder worldwide — continues to affect substantial segments of Morocco's southern population despite decades of government intervention and international health initiatives.

According to the study, the overall prevalence of IDA among children aged six months to five years in the surveyed areas reached approximately 38 percent, with rural communities showing infection rates significantly higher than their urban counterparts. Among pregnant women, roughly one in three participants tested positive for iron deficiency, a figure that public health experts warn can lead to severe complications including low birth weight, preterm delivery, and increased maternal mortality risk.

Researchers attributed the persistence of the condition to a combination of factors. Dietary surveys revealed that many households in the region rely heavily on cereals and plant-based foods low in bioavailable iron, while animal-source protein consumption remains limited due to economic constraints. At the same time, infectious diseases such as intestinal parasites and recurrent malaria in certain areas were found to exacerbate iron loss and reduce absorption.

The study also highlighted gaps in existing supplementation programs. While Morocco has implemented nationwide iron-folic acid distribution and food fortification campaigns over the past two decades, the researchers noted that coverage in remote southern communities remains inconsistent. Cultural preferences, lack of awareness among caregivers, and logistical challenges in delivering supplements to scattered rural settlements were cited as key barriers.

Public health officials in Morocco have acknowledged the findings and stated that they are reviewing current intervention strategies. Plans are reportedly underway to strengthen community-based screening, expand micronutrient supplementation for at-risk groups, and integrate nutrition education into primary healthcare visits.

Experts emphasize that iron deficiency anemia is entirely preventable and treatable when addressed early, but cautioned that without sustained investment and targeted outreach, southern Morocco will continue to bear a disproportionate share of the disease burden.
