The West Bengal School Services Commission (WBSSC) has confirmed that more than five lakh applications have been received so far for the recruitment drive targeting 35,726 teacher positions across government and government-aided schools in the state. The response has far exceeded initial expectations, marking one of the largest rounds of teaching recruitment in the history of West Bengal's education sector.
The vacancies span multiple categories including Primary Teacher (PT), Post Primary Teacher (PPT), and Senior Teacher positions across various subjects. Candidates applying for these posts must possess the requisite teaching qualifications, including B.Ed or equivalent degrees, and clear eligibility criteria set by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
WBSSC officials stated that the commission is in the process of scrutinizing applications to verify eligibility, remove duplicates, and prepare the final list of qualified candidates. A detailed advertisement was released earlier this year outlining the notification, application window, examination schedule, and selection procedure.
Education analysts note that the massive turnout reflects both the high demand for stable teaching jobs in a state with a large population and growing unemployment among educated youth. Many applicants are reportedly first-time candidates, while others appear after failing to secure appointments in previous recruitment cycles conducted by the commission.
The selection process will involve a written examination followed by document verification. Successful candidates will be appointed to school-level teaching positions throughout West Bengal, filling gaps that have persisted due to earlier vacancies remaining unfilled over several years.
