The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has officially issued a notification inviting applications for around 22,000 vacancies under the Group D recruitment drive for 2026. The announcement has sent ripples across the nation, particularly among lakhs of candidates who have been awaiting fresh recruitment cycles after years of delayed advertisements and ongoing legal disputes surrounding previous hiring rounds.
According to the notification, Group D posts span a wide range of operational roles within Indian Railways, including track maintainer, points man, helper, and various other supporting positions that are critical to the functioning of the rail network. These roles are considered among the most sought-after government jobs given the stability they offer and the relatively lower educational eligibility requirements.
However, the timing of the announcement has drawn criticism from several candidate groups and coaching centers. Many aspirants reported that they received the news with barely a few days' notice before the application deadline, leaving insufficient time to gather required documents such as caste certificates, educational mark sheets, and photographs in the prescribed format. Several online forums saw threads expressing frustration over what candidates described as an unfairly compressed window.
The eligibility criteria for the recruitment require candidates to have passed at minimum the 10th standard examination from a recognized board, along with specific technical qualifications for certain trade-wise posts. Candidates must also fall within the prescribed age limit, which typically ranges from 18 to 33 years, with standard relaxations applicable for reserved categories as per government norms.
The selection process is expected to follow the multi-stage structure characteristic of RRB recruitments, beginning with a Computer Based Test (CBT) for Level-1 posts, followed by document verification and a medical examination. Previous cycles have seen more than one crore applicants competing for fewer than ten lakh vacancies, making the competition extremely stiff.
Officials at the RRB have stated that the acceleration of this recruitment cycle is part of a broader effort to clear a significant backlog of pending vacancies across Indian Railways, which remains one of the largest employers in the world with millions of personnel.
