A honeymooning couple has been left severely injured after a fire broke out at a homestay in the Sitong area of Darjeeling on Thursday night, prompting an investigation by local police into what appears to have been a dangerous mix-up involving kerosene.
The incident occurred when staff at the homestay attempted to prepare a barbecue for the newlywed couple. According to police, kerosene was accidentally poured into the barbecue pit instead of cooking oil, causing flames to erupt violently and unexpectedly. The newlywed woman suffered burns covering approximately 60% of her body, while her husband sustained injuries while attempting to rescue her from the blazing fire.
The couple had traveled to Darjeeling to celebrate their honeymoon. The severity of the woman's injuries prompted an immediate transfer to a private hospital in Siliguri, where she is currently undergoing treatment. Her husband, identified as Sameer Das, received initial medical care at the scene and was subsequently discharged from the hospital after receiving first-aid treatment for his burns.
The woman's family has filed a formal complaint at the Kurseong Police Station, accusing the homestay of negligence. Police have initiated an investigation into the matter, though no arrests have been made as of now. Authorities are examining whether proper safety protocols were followed at the establishment and whether criminal liability applies to those responsible for preparing the barbecue.
This incident has reignited concerns about safety standards at tourist homestays in the Darjeeling region, where such accommodations have become increasingly popular among visitors.
