Two of India's most populous states have recently moved ahead with significant recruitment drives for frontline workers in the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, signalling a major push to strengthen maternal and child nutrition infrastructure at the grassroots level.
In Karnataka, the Department of Women and Child Development issued multiple notifications spanning 2020 and 2021. The earlier 2020 notification called for 63 vacant positions of Anganwadi Worker and Helper across districts, while a subsequent broader drive in 2021 opened applications for no fewer than 499 such posts. Candidates were directed to apply through the official portal at anganwadirecruit.kar.nic.in. These figures, though lower than Gujarat's scale, reflect Karnataka's phased recruitment approach tied to district-wise staffing gaps.
Meanwhile, Gujarat's Women and Child Development department floated the largest single notification among the two states — 2,038 vacancies for Anganwadi Workers and Helpers. Eligibility for Gujarat's drive was kept relatively broad, with candidates who had passed either the 8th or 12th standard found eligible to apply. This wide eligibility bracket is expected to attract a large pool of applicants from rural and semi-urban areas where Anganwadi centres are most needed.
Anganwadi Workers and Helpers form the backbone of India's early childhood care and nutrition delivery system. They are responsible for supplementary nutrition, pre-school non-formal education, health check-ups, and immunisation coordination at the village level. The recruitment drives come at a time when the government has been emphasising stronger implementation of the ICDS programme, especially post-pandemic, to ensure that nutritional deficits among children and pregnant women do not go unaddressed.
Recruitment officials in both states have stated that shortlisting will be based on merit-cum-eligibility criteria, with preference often given to local candidates. Candidates selected under these notifications are expected to undergo orientation training before being posted to Anganwadi centres across their respective districts.
