A large gathering of job aspirants took to the streets of Dharwad in northern Karnataka on Saturday, demanding that the state government urgently launch recruitment drives to fill long-pending vacancies across various administrative and public sector departments. The protesters, predominantly young men and women in their twenties and thirties, held placards and shouted slogans calling for transparency in the hiring process and faster completion of selection procedures.
The demonstration was organized by a coalition of local unemployment associations and youth groups who complained that hundreds of government vacancies in education, health, police, and other sectors have remained unfilled for years despite multiple notification rounds. Many candidates who had appeared for preliminary exams and interviews months or even years ago are still awaiting final result declarations and appointment letters.
Protest leaders stated that the lack of timely recruitment has created a crisis of confidence among educated youth in the region. They pointed out that several competitive examinations conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission and other state agencies have produced merit lists that remain unactioned due to bureaucratic delays and policy uncertainties. The demonstrators also raised concerns about the absence of a clear timeline for filling vacancies in local body elections and Gram Panchayat-level appointments.
District Administration officials confirmed receipt of the protest but stated that no law and order breach occurred. A senior police spokesperson said arrangements were made to ensure the demonstration remained peaceful and did not disrupt traffic or public movement. Government sources indicated that the issue will be discussed at an upcoming administrative review meeting.
