A growing body of behavioural research is challenging the popular notion that grabbing a samosa instead of walking away comes down to a simple lack of discipline. Psychologists who study impulse control say the 10-second window between seeing a treat and deciding whether to reach for it is shaped by a complex web of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
The idea behind the so-called 10-second self-control test is straightforward: pause for ten seconds when tempted, and your rational brain gets a chance to override the emotional urge. But experts caution that this model oversimplifies how human decision-making actually works.
"Willpower is not a standalone muscle you can flex at will," said a Delhi-based clinical psychologist familiar with impulse behaviour research. "Hunger directly affects the prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for delayed gratification. When blood sugar drops, the brain prioritises immediate energy over long-term goals. That means someone who hasn't eaten properly is neurobiologically less equipped to resist a high-calorie snack, regardless of how strong their self-control theoretically is."
Stress plays an equally significant role. Under acute or chronic stress, the body releases cortisol, which increases cravings for sugary and fatty foods. In these moments, the brain seeks quick comfort rather than making measured choices. Social dynamics further complicate matters — studies have consistently shown that people eat more in groups and are less likely to resist tempting foods when others around them are doing the same.
Environmental design also matters enormously. Research in behavioural economics demonstrates that the ease with which food is available dramatically influences choices. A study published in a leading nutrition journal found that placing fruit at eye level in workplace cafeterias increased selection by up to 46 per cent, while hiding unhealthy snacks reduced consumption without any explicit messaging.
Planning and habit formation emerged as perhaps the strongest predictors of impulse resistance. People who prepare meals in advance, set specific rules about snacking times, or use implementation intentions — statements like 'If I feel the urge to snack at 4 pm, then I will drink a glass of water first' — show significantly higher rates of success compared to those relying on willpower alone.
Boredom, often overlooked, has also been identified as a trigger. The brain treats novelty-seeking and reward-seeking circuits similarly, meaning periods of low stimulation can push people toward food simply to create engagement.
Experts recommend a multi-layered approach to managing impulses rather than relying solely on willpower. Strategies include restructuring environments to reduce temptation, establishing pre-decided routines for snack times, managing stress through exercise or mindfulness, and recognising that occasional lapses are normal physiological responses rather than moral failures.
