Sleep researchers and health experts across India are urging fitness enthusiasts to reconsider their evening workout routines, recommending that intense exercise be completed well before sunset rather than into the late hours. The central recommendation centres on a 7 PM cutoff — finishing physical activity at least three to four hours before bedtime to allow the body adequate time to wind down.
The science behind this guidance is straightforward. Vigorous exercise elevates core body temperature, stimulates the release of alertness-triggering hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, and activates the sympathetic nervous system. All of these physiological changes are counterproductive to sleep. The body normally requires a drop in core temperature to initiate and maintain deep, restorative sleep cycles. When workouts are pushed too close to bedtime, that natural cooling process is disrupted, making it harder to fall asleep and reducing the overall quality of rest.
While the general rule suggests avoiding strenuous exercise after 7 PM, experts stress that individual responses vary significantly. Some people can work out late and still sleep soundly, while others may find even moderate evening exercise disrupts their rest. Sleep specialists recommend paying close attention to personal sleep patterns — if late-night workouts repeatedly delay sleep onset or reduce sleep depth, shifting exercise to an earlier time of day is the most practical solution.
Fitness professionals also note that morning and early evening workouts align better with the body's natural circadian rhythm, which peaks in terms of muscular strength and cardiovascular performance in the late afternoon. This makes those windows not only gentler on sleep but potentially more effective for physical training.
The advice comes amid growing awareness of sleep health in urban India, where long working hours and screen time have already contributed to widespread sleep deprivation among professionals and students alike.
