India's banking and financial sector is witnessing one of its largest recruitment pushes in recent years, as two major institutions — the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Punjab National Bank (PNB) — simultaneously opened their application windows for thousands of positions in early 2026.

The RBI, the country's central banking institution, announced the recruitment of 650 candidates for the post of Assistant on its official portal. The positions come with a starting pay scale ranging between ₹29,000 and ₹58,514 per month, making them among the most sought-after government banking jobs. Candidates who secure these roles can expect comprehensive benefits including medical allowances, housing allowances, and pension contributions under the National Pension System. The application deadline for the RBI recruitment has been set for March 8, 2026, giving aspirants nearly two weeks from the announcement to complete their submissions. Shortlisted candidates will typically undergo a computer-based examination followed by document verification before final selection.

Meanwhile, Punjab National Bank released an even larger recruitment notification for 5,138 Apprentice positions across various branches nationwide. These apprenticeship roles offer a monthly stipend between ₹12,300 and ₹15,000, which is structured as a training allowance rather than a full salary. The PNB apprenticeship programme is designed to provide practical on-the-job training to young professionals looking to enter the banking sector, serving as a potential pipeline for future regular appointments. The application window for PNB closures earlier, on February 24, 2026.

Employment experts note that the concurrent opening of both recruitment drives signals a strong hiring outlook for the public sector banking industry in 2026. Combined, these two announcements account for more than 5,700 job opportunities, offering a significant boost to job seekers across the country — particularly graduates and young professionals from tier-2 and tier-3 cities who often face limited local employment options.

Candidates interested in the RBI Assistant role are advised to carefully review the eligibility criteria, which typically includes a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized university and age limits generally between 20 and 30 years, with relaxations reserved for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and other categories as per government norms. For PNB apprentices, the eligibility usually requires a graduation degree in any discipline, with age limits typically spanning 18 to 27 years. Both portals are expected to release detailed advertisements containing syllabus patterns, examination dates, and reservation policies in the coming weeks.
