The Department of Posts, under the Ministry of Communications, has officially launched the recruitment drive for 23,757 Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) positions spread across various states and union territories of India. The notification was released on the official portal indiapost.gov.in, and candidates can apply through the online mode beginning from the date of announcement.
The GDS posts are among the most sought-after entry-level government positions because they do not require a competitive examination for selection. Instead, candidates who score above the prescribed cutoff in their Class 10 board examinations will be called for appointment based on merit, with final allocation to specific Post Offices determined by their state-wise rank and preference filled during the application process.
Eligibility criteria are straightforward. Applicants must have passed Class 10 or its equivalent from a recognized educational board. There is an age relaxation provision in line with standard government rules, granting five years of relaxation to candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. The application fee isRs. 100 for general category candidates, while SC, ST, and female applicants are exempt from paying any fee.
While one report indicated the vacancy count as being over 25,000, the official notification specifies 23,757 posts. Candidates are advised to refer to the detailed advertisement published on the India Post website for the definitive number and state-wise distribution. Applications are to be submitted exclusively through the online portal, and candidates must ensure they have valid email IDs and mobile numbers linked to their Aadhaar before applying.
The Gramin Dak Sevak role involves managing rural post offices, handling postal services, collecting stamps and money orders, and delivering mail in gram panchayat areas. It is a Group C non-gazetted position offering a monthly salary package in the range of Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 12,000, along with statutory benefits such as provident fund coverage and medical allowances.
