The Department of Posts, operating under the Ministry of Communications, has officially launched the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) recruitment drive for 2026, inviting applications for a total of 23,757 vacancies spread across various regions of India. This massive hiring exercise is aimed at strengthening the rural postal network by filling positions at post offices in remote and semi-urban areas where qualified local candidates are essential for day-to-day operations.

Unlike many other government recruitment processes, the GDS selection does not include a competitive written examination. Eligibility is primarily determined by the candidate's performance in their Class 10 board examinations, making it one of the most accessible entry-level government job opportunities in the country. Applicants who have passed or appeared for their 10th standard exams from a recognized board can apply online through the official India Post portal.

The recruitment will be distributed across multiple circles and regions nationwide. Candidates who meet the minimum academic criteria will be called for document verification, and final selection will be based on merit as determined by their Class 10 marks. The department has emphasized that candidates must be residents of the local area or nearby districts to ensure better retention and community connectivity at rural post offices.

Officials have cautioned applicants to complete their registration before the deadline, as late submissions are not entertained under any circumstances. Interested candidates are advised to visit the official India Post recruitment website, create an account, fill in the required personal and academic details, upload the necessary documents in the specified formats, and pay the application fee — which is waived for candidates belonging to reserved categories.
