Former Tehelka magazine founder and editor Tarun Tejpal surrendered before a court in Mapusa, Goa, on Monday, complying with a directive from the Supreme Court of India. The surrender comes weeks after the Bombay High Court sentenced him to ten years in prison for the rape of a junior female colleague at a 2013 awards event in Goa.
Tejpal, once celebrated as one of India's most prominent investigative journalists, walked into the Mapusa judicial magistrate's court accompanied by his legal team. He will now begin serving his sentence after the appellate court upheld his conviction last month, making it the final judicial step before he could be required to turn himself in.
The case stemmed from an incident during the 2013 Indian Express Media Awards in Panaji, where Tejpal was accused of sexually assaulting a woman who worked as a junior colleague in the media industry. The allegation sent shockwaves through India's journalism fraternity, raising urgent questions about workplace safety and power dynamics within the media.
After the incident, Tejpal was arrested and spent considerable time in custody before being granted bail.
