In a significant move to strengthen its manpower and address long-standing vacancies, the Delhi Police has launched a massive recruitment drive for more than 5,500 positions across multiple categories. The announcement, made in early 2020, sends out an invitation to lakhs of aspiring candidates across the National Capital Territory and surrounding states who have been waiting for an opportunity to join one of India's largest metropolitan police forces.
The recruitment drive covers a wide range of posts including Constable (General), Head Constable (Ministerial and Explorer), and several other support staff positions. These vacancies have been accumulating over the years due to retirements, promotions, and the growing demands of policing in a city of over 18 million residents. The delhi police had previously faced criticism for operating below optimal strength, which officials acknowledged could hamper effective law enforcement and public safety operations across the capital's 12 zones.
Eligibility criteria for the various posts require candidates to hold at minimum a graduation degree for certain positions and a higher secondary qualification for others. The age limit generally falls between 18 and 25 years, with relaxations available for candidates belonging to reserved categories as per government norms. Physical fitness standards and medical requirements will apply specifically for field postings such as constable and head constable roles.
The selection process is expected to follow the conventional multi-stage recruitment framework: a written examination conducted by the Delhi Police itself or through the Staff Selection Commission, followed by a physical efficiency test, physical measurement test, document verification, and a final medical examination. Candidates who clear each stage will be placed on a merit list, with final appointment recommendations dependent on both performance scores and the number of available vacancies in each category.
Salary packages for the recruited personnel will vary depending on the post and level within the Indian Pay Commission structure. Constables can expect a starting gross monthly pay that includes basic pay along with various allowances such as transport, uniform, and city compensatory allowances, while head constable positions offer correspondingly higher pay bands with greater responsibility and benefits.
