Head Constable is a supervisory position within the Delhi Police structure, ranking above the Constable cadre and below the Assistant Sub-Inspector. Officers holding this rank are typically responsible for leading teams in the field, managing local police outposts, and ensuring law and order at the ground level. The role carries significant operational responsibility in one of India's most politically sensitive and densely populated cities.
Under the Seventh Central Pay Commission's pay matrix, the pay scale for a Head Constable falls within the ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400 range, with a starting basic pay that translates to an estimated in-hand salary of approximately ₹80,000 per month when allowances such as house rent allowance, transport allowance, and uniform allowance are factored in. Delhi-based personnel also receive the higher urban allowance applicable to the National Capital Territory.
The recruitment process involved multiple stages including a written examination, physical endurance test, document verification, and a medical fitness assessment. Candidates were required to meet age, educational, and physical standard criteria laid down by the Delhi Police and the Staff Selection Commission.
The recruitment drive came at a time when the Delhi Police had been actively seeking to address staffing shortages. With a population exceeding 18 million, the capital requires a substantially large police force, and gaps in lower-rank postings can affect patrol coverage and community policing efforts. The addition of 554 Head Constables was expected to bolster mid-level command capacity across zones and specialized units.
Candidates who qualified through the selection process were subsequently posted to various districts and special units of the Delhi Police, undergoing further training before being assigned to active duties.
