In a move that could redefine employment opportunities for thousands of jobseekers, the Chhattisgarh state cabinet on Monday approved a substantial increase in the maximum age limit for government recruitment. The upper age cap for direct recruitment to state government positions has been raised from 38 years to 45 years, a shift that experts say will unlock employment pathways for older candidates who were previously barred from applying.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, where several workforce-related policy changes were discussed. Officials stated that the revised age criterion will apply across the majority of direct recruitmentnotifications issued by the Chhattisgarh Professional Examination Board and other state recruiting agencies, unless a specific notification carries a different age ceiling.
The earlier limit of 38 years had drawn widespread criticism from advocacy groups and unemployed youth across the state, who argued that it excluded experienced professionals and those who had attempted government exams multiple times over the years. Job aspirants in their early to mid-forties, particularly individuals with prior work experience or those who had pursued higher education later in life, found themselves entirely shut out of the state's largest employer pipeline.
Under the new rule, candidates between the ages of 18 and 45 will now be eligible to apply, subject to existing educational and other eligibility qualifications. Government employees in scheduled castes, tribal communities, and other categories that already enjoy age relaxation under existing reservation policy will continue to receive additional concessions as per prevailing norms.
Recruitment experts noted that the change aligns Chhattisgarh with a growing national trend. Several other states, including Maharashtra and Rajasthan, have in recent years eased age restrictions to broaden the talent pool and reduce the backlog of vacant positions in departments ranging from policing and education to healthcare and administration.
The cabinet also discussed related measures aimed at speeding up pending recruitment processes, though details of those proposals have not yet been made public. State officials said the formal notification amending the age criteria is expected to be issued within days, after which the updated limits will take effect for all forthcoming examination cycles.
