Apple officially announced its latest wireless earbuds, the AirPods 5, marking a significant upgrade over the previous generation. The new earbuds come bundled with several features that were previously exclusive to higher-end models, including active noise cancellation (ANC) and real-time live translation capabilities. For the first time, Apple has brought noise cancellation down to its more affordable tier, signaling a shift in how the company segments its audio product lineup.
The AirPods 5 also introduce hands-free access to Siri AI, allowing users to activate and interact with the virtual assistant without touching the earbud. This comes as part of Apple's broader push into artificial intelligence integration across its product ecosystem, which has been a focus area for the tech giant in recent years. The live translation feature enables near-instant translation during conversations, a capability that positions the AirPods 5 as a travel-friendly device for international users.
In terms of design, Apple has refined the shape of the AirPods 5 for better comfort and a more secure fit. The company claims the new model is more durable than before, making it suitable not only for casual everyday use but also for workouts and physical activity. Sweat and water resistance have been improved to meet the demands of active users, addressing one of the common criticisms of earlier AirPods generations.
Battery performance remains a key consideration for wireless earbuds, and Apple says the AirPods 5 deliver up to five hours of listening time on a single charge with ANC enabled. The charging case extends total listening time significantly, though exact combined figures depend on usage patterns. Apple has not yet confirmed pricing for the premium model with advanced features, but the base variant is expected to start at $129, placing it squarely in the mid-range segment.
The launch of AirPods 5 comes at a time when the wireless earbuds market is becoming increasingly crowded. Competitors such as Samsung, Sony, Bose, and various Chinese manufacturers have been aggressively expanding their offerings in both the budget and premium segments. By bundling ANC and AI-powered features into a more affordable product, Apple appears to be responding to market pressure while reinforcing its position in one of the most competitive corners of consumer electronics.
