Vishay Intertechnology has introduced a new line of transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes designed to handle some of the highest surge energies in the semiconductor protection market. The XFD11KxxCA series offers an 11 kW peak pulse power rating at the standard 10/1000 microsecond waveform, making it one of the most robust bidirectional TVS solutions available in a surface-mount footprint.
The devices come in DO-218AC packages, a surface-mount form factor that allows engineers to integrate high-power protection directly onto printed circuit boards without resorting to through-hole or larger discrete components. This packaging choice reflects a growing industry trend toward miniaturization even as power-handling requirements climb.
Flat-clamping technology is the key innovation behind these devices. Traditional TVS diodes tend to exhibit a rounded clamping curve, meaning the voltage can spike significantly above the breakdown threshold during a surge event. The flat-clamping characteristic of the XFD11KxxCA series maintains a more stable voltage clamp throughout the pulse, providing tighter protection for sensitive downstream components. This is particularly valuable in systems where even brief overvoltage events can cause permanent damage.
Being bidirectional, the devices can protect circuits against surges occurring in either polarity, which is essential for AC signal lines and certain DC bus configurations found in industrial machinery, renewable energy inverters, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and automotive electronics.
Industry observers note that the 11 kW rating at 10/1000 μs places these parts in a competitive position for IEC 61000-4-5 surge testing, a benchmark standard for electromagnetic compatibility in electrical and electronic equipment. The combination of high power dissipation, flat clamping, and a compact SMD package makes the series suitable for applications where space is constrained but protection requirements are severe.
Vishay has not yet disclosed pricing or full availability timelines for the XFD11KxxCA series, though samples are typically made available to design engineers before general production rollout.
