NAGPUR — A woman was arrested on Wednesday after she allegedly ploughed into a group of pedestrians, including three children, in the Gorewada locality of Nagpur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday night. The incident occurred when the woman was driving a fast-moving Toyota Fortuner at a high speed through the area.
According to local police, the woman first collided with an SUV owned by Balu Kulumathe. At the time of the impact, Kulumathe and his children had just stepped out of their vehicle. As they were standing near the roadside, the same speeding car struck them as well, leaving several people injured.
A total of seven individuals were hit in the incident. Among them are three children, whose conditions have been described as serious. Several others are undergoing treatment, though details about the exact nature of injuries remain limited pending official medical reports.
Police sources confirmed that the woman was driving a Toyota Fortuner at the time of the accident. Early investigations suggest she may have been under the influence of alcohol while operating the vehicle. A forensic test and medical examination is expected to confirm whether she was drunk behind the wheel.
The incident has triggered outrage in the area, with locals expressing shock over a person allegedly driving recklessly in a residential neighbourhood and causing such devastation.
