Ukraine's state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, has revealed that a diplomatic train carrying Western officials was stationed at Yagodyn railway station — located close to the border with Poland — shortly before a Russian missile strike hit a locomotive at the same site. The disclosure has intensified scrutiny over whether the presence of foreign diplomats at or near the station influenced the targeting of the area.
Yagodyn is a key logistics hub on the western edge of Ukraine, serving as one of the primary freight and passenger crossing points into Poland. The station has historically handled trains moving humanitarian aid, military supplies, and diplomatic personnel between Kyiv and European capitals. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the locomotive struck in the recent attack was part of regular rail operations, though a diplomatic train was also reportedly in the vicinity at the time.
The statement came amid a broader pattern of Russian strikes on Ukrainian transport infrastructure. Over the past months, Moscow has repeatedly targeted railways, depots, and marshalling yards across western and central Ukraine, aiming to disrupt supply lines feeding equipment and aid into the country. Railway workers have been among the most vulnerable civilians caught in these attacks, and safety concerns have grown among staff who continue to operate under threat.
Ukrainian authorities have not yet released detailed information about the identities of those on the diplomatic train or which Western nations were represented.
