In what is being called the most job-oriented budget in the state's recent history, the West Bengal government unveiled its 2026-27 financial proposals on Thursday, laying out an ambitious roadmap that promises to reshape public employment across the state.

The defining announcement was the commitment to create one lakh government jobs over the next five years. Speaking during the budget presentation, the finance minister stated that the state would undertake a massive recruitment drive spanning multiple departments — including education, healthcare, police, agriculture, and local administration — to address the long-pending demand for employment among the state's youth.

A major highlight of the budget is the introduction of a 33% reservation for women in all future government recruitments. Officials described it as a landmark step toward gender-inclusive governance. The policy will apply to fresh selections made under state-level examinations and direct appointments alike, signaling a significant departure from the status quo.

State government employees will also see relief as the dearness allowance (DA) has been increased to 38%, up from the previous rate. The revision is expected to provide immediate financial relief to lakhs of civil servants, pensioners, and retired employees who have been grappling with rising inflation and eroding purchasing power.

Education sector officials welcomed the move, noting that many vacant teaching posts in rural and semi-urban schools across West Bengal could soon be filled under the renewed recruitment drive. Medical and health department sources added that the budget also allocates dedicated funds for hiring additional staff at district hospitals and community health centres.

Political analysts say the budget is clearly designed to consolidate the ruling party's grassroots support ahead of future electoral cycles. Labour unions have broadly welcomed the announcements but cautioned that implementation will be the real test. Several opposition parties have asked for clarity on the timeline, funding mechanism, and eligibility criteria for the new positions.

The budget also proposes amendments to existing recruitment rules to facilitate the women's quota and streamlines the selection process through the state public service commission. Finance ministry insiders confirmed that the fiscal allocation for the employment and labour department has been significantly augmented to support the initiative.
