The Uttar Pradesh government is set to launch a massive recruitment exercise to fill 10,000 teacher vacancies under the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council (UP Basic Shiksha Parishad), officials confirmed recently. The move is part of a broader effort to address the chronic shortage of qualified teaching staff in the state's elementary and secondary schools.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the recruitment will cover positions for Primary Teachers (PRT), Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT), and Post Graduate Teachers (PGT) across various subjects. The posts span government-run schools, aided schools, and schools operating under the basic education department throughout the state's 75 districts.
The state government has cited alarming vacancy rates in the education sector as the primary reason for the large-scale hiring. Reports indicate that thousands of teaching positions remain unfilled due to delays in previous recruitment cycles, leading to overburdened teachers and compromised learning outcomes for students.
Candidates who cleared the UP Teacher Eligibility Test (UP TET) in earlier years may be given preference, as per preliminary guidelines being framed by the council. The selection process is expected to include document verification and possibly a skill assessment or interview round, though detailed notification has not yet been released.
Education analysts have welcomed the announcement but cautioned that the real challenge lies in timely implementation. "Recruitment drives of this scale are welcome, but what matters is that the appointments reach classrooms quickly," said a senior education policy researcher based in Lucknow. "Many schools in rural Uttar Pradesh operate with one or no qualified teachers, and every delay affects children's education."
The Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council, established under the state's basic education Act, oversees the administration of primary and upper-primary education in the state. It functions under the Department of Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and manages approximately 2.5 lakh schools with millions of enrolled students across the state.
Stakeholders expect the official notification to be published in the coming weeks, with the application window expected to open shortly thereafter.
