The major central recruiting bodies of India have unveiled their exam calendars for 2026, marking the beginning of one of the most extensive public-sector hiring seasons in recent memory. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), and Indian Railways each released comprehensive schedules that will shape the academic and professional lives of millions of aspirants nationwide.
The UPSC calendar includes the Civil Services Examination, the Combined National Defence Academy Examination, the Engineering Services Examination, and several other prestigious tests conducted under its umbrella. Each of these examinations is among the most competitive in the country, drawing lakhs of applicants for just a few thousand vacancies. The schedule provides tentative dates for the notification releases, application windows, and preliminary as well as main examination phases.
The SSC has laid out its roadmap for the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination, the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) test, the Multi-Tasking Staff recruitment, and several other examinations conducted at the non-gazetted level. The SSC CGL, in particular, is one of the most sought-after exams for undergraduate degree holders seeking Group B and Group C positions across various ministries and departments.
Indian Railways, which remains the single largest employer in the country, published its own schedule covering the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examinations at multiple levels — from graduate and post-graduate posts to technical and non-technical roles. The RRB NTPC and Group D examinations continue to draw the largest applicant pools, often crossing the ten-lakh mark for a single recruitment cycle.
Education experts note that the simultaneous release of these calendars allows students to plan their preparation more effectively, choose appropriate exam combinations, and avoid overlapping test dates that previously forced many candidates to sacrifice their chances. Career counsellors have urged aspirants to study the full schedule carefully before committing to any single examination, as the overlaps between UPSC prelims and other state or central tests remain a recurring challenge.
