The Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Service Selection Commission (UPSSSC) has taken a significant step toward filling thousands of primary teaching positions in the state by releasing its official notification for the UP PRT Assistant Teacher Recruitment 2026. A total of 12,405 vacancies have been declared, marking one of the largest teacher recruitment drives undertaken by the state in recent years.
The recruitment will fill positions for Primary Teachers, commonly referred to as PRT or Praathamik Shikshak in Uttar Pradesh, who are responsible for teaching students in classes 1 through 5 at government and government-aided primary schools across the state. These positions fall under the non-teaching but instructional cadre, where recruits serve as assistant teachers with classroom teaching responsibilities.
According to the notification, candidates who have completed their graduation from a recognized university along with a D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) or BTEd (Bachelor in Education) qualification are eligible to apply. The age limit for general category candidates stands at 40 years, with relaxation applicable for reserved categories as per UP government norms. The application process is expected to begin shortly after the notification's publication on the official UPSSSC website, upsssc.gov.in.
This recruitment drive is seen as a major opportunity for lakhs of aspiring educators across Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. Previous cycles of PRT recruitment saw massive turnout, with several lakh candidates competing for a fraction of the available seats. Education analysts note that filling these positions is critical for addressing the chronic shortage of qualified teachers at the primary level in Uttar Pradesh, which has long struggled with high pupil-teacher ratios in government schools.
The selection process will typically involve a written examination conducted by UPSSSC, followed by document verification. Candidates are advised to regularly check the official notification and website for updates regarding application dates, exam schedule, and syllabus details. The commission has indicated that further clarifications and an official exam calendar will be released in the coming weeks.
