The Uttar Pradesh state cabinet has approved a major overhaul of the state's primary education infrastructure, clearing the development of 14,429 primary schools into smart schools. The decision was taken during a recent cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and signals the state government's continued push to modernize learning environments across rural and semi-urban areas.
Under the Smart Schools framework, the upgraded institutions will be equipped with digital classrooms, internet connectivity, computer labs, and other technology-enabled teaching tools. The initiative is aimed at bridging the learning gap between urban and rural schools and ensuring that students in even the most remote villages have access to contemporary educational resources.
Uttar Pradesh, with over 2.4 lakh schools and more than 8 million enrolled students at the primary level, has been rolling out the smart school programme in phases since its inception. This latest approval covers a significant chunk of尚未-upgraded institutions and represents one of the largest single approvals under the scheme to date.
Education officials indicated that the conversion process will involve infrastructure renovation, installation of smart boards and projectors, provision of computers and tablets, and teacher training programmes to ensure effective use of digital tools in the classroom. The state government has allocated funds through its annual education budget and seeks additional central assistance under schemes such as the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Samagra Shiksha.
The move has been welcomed by education activists, who have long advocated for deeper technological integration in Uttar Pradesh's vast public school system. However, some observers have cautioned that sustained maintenance of equipment, reliable electricity supply in remote areas, and continuous teacher upskilling will be critical to the long-term success of the programme.
