Trichy: A comprehensive bomb threat drill was conducted at Tiruchirappalli International Airport on Thursday, involving a simulated scenario of an explosive device threat aboard an aircraft and a subsequent emergency evacuation of the terminal building. The exercise, which lasted nearly two hours, brought together multiple agencies to test their preparedness, inter-agency coordination, and real-time response capabilities.
According to airport authorities, the mock drill began with a hypothetical announcement of a bomb threat received over the radio for a scheduled flight. Immediately, the airport's emergency operations centre was activated, and standard operating procedures were put into motion. The airport security force, fire services, local police, medical personnel, and airline representatives all participated in the exercise.
The scenario included the evacuation of passengers and crew from the terminal building under controlled conditions, while ground staff moved aircraft away from the main terminal to a secure zone. Rescue teams simulated casualty management, and the fire service responded to a mock situation involving smoke and potential hazardous material.
Senior officials observed the drill from a control room and noted that all参演 agencies responded within stipulated timeframes. The exercise also tested communication channels between the airport operator, law enforcement agencies, and state-level disaster response authorities.
Airport Managing Director R. Sundaram stated that such drills are conducted periodically to ensure that all stakeholders remain prepared for worst-case scenarios. "Coordination among different agencies is critical during real emergencies, and this exercise helped identify areas where we can improve our response mechanisms," he said.
This is the latest in a series of security preparedness exercises being conducted across Indian airports in recent months, following increased emphasis on aviation security by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Drills like these are part of the annual security audit requirements set by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
