TMC Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Moitra alleged on Thursday that she was targeted in an egg-pelting incident during a public meeting in Tehatta under the Nadia district in West Bengal on Wednesday. According to her, a group of around seven to ten individuals attacked her while she was attending the programme. She further claimed that local police personnel were present at the venue and did not intervene to stop the assault.
In a video message posted online shortly after the incident, Mahua Moitra said she had come to her constituency following what she described as a directive from the Supreme Court, asking her to face whatever challenges came her way. She stated that she had informed the West Bengal police about her visit but said BJP workers carried out the attack with the tacit support of law enforcement personnel.
This marks the third time Mahua Moitra has alleged physical attacks against her since she entered mainstream politics. In previous incidents, she had raised concerns about hostile treatment during public appearances, though those episodes drew less media attention than the current one.
Local political observers noted that tensions in the Nadia parliamentary constituency have been high in recent months, with both the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party mobilising supporters intensively ahead of upcoming state-level elections. Political opponents have dismissed Mahua Moitra's allegations as an attempt to manufacture controversy and divert attention from ongoing questions about her conduct in Parliament.
Police authorities in West Bengal have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, sources within the state police indicate that a report has been received and preliminary inquiries are underway. Mahua Moitra has urged the state administration to take strict action against those involved and to ensure her safety for future public engagements in the region.
