The Southern Railway zone of Indian Railways has achieved full electrification of its entire broad-gauge route network, marking a historic milestone nearly 95 years after the zone was established in 1931. The achievement completes one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the zone's history and positions it alongside recently electrified zones like West Central Railway as a leader in India's rail modernization drive.
The electrification covers over 5,600 route kilometers spanning Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. This includes some of the most challenging terrain sections, such as the mountain routes through the Western Ghats connecting Nilambur and Shoranur, which had long been considered technically difficult for overhead wiring due to steep gradients and sharp curves.
Railway officials stated that the transition eliminates the need for diesel locomotives on broad-gauge routes within the zone, replacing them entirely with electric traction. Southern Railway operates approximately 200 electric multiple unit (EMU) rakes, 75 diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains, and 22 non-AC shatabdi trains, all of which will now benefit from electric propulsion on fully electrified corridors.
The move is expected to deliver significant operational savings. Electric locomotives are far more energy-efficient than their diesel counterparts, consuming roughly a third of the energy cost per kilometer. Industry estimates suggest the shift could save the zone billions of rupees annually in fuel expenditure while simultaneously cutting carbon emissions by thousands of tonnes each year.
The electrification project involved coordinated efforts between the railway board, state governments, and power distribution companies across five states to ensure adequate power supply infrastructure along the entire corridor. Multiple substations were upgraded or newly constructed to handle the increased electrical load from train operations.
Passengers are expected to see smoother journeys with fewer delays, as electric locomotives provide better acceleration and braking performance compared to older diesel engines. The zone also plans to introduce additional semi-fast and passenger services on previously underserved routes, made viable by lower operating costs of electric traction.
