The celebration has taken on added significance for the beneficiaries, many of whom spent years living in fear and uncertainty after being displaced from their original homes due to Atiq's illegal land grabs.
The land in question was part of a broader government effort to reclaim encroached properties across several districts of Uttar Pradesh. Atiq Ahmed, who was killed in a Lucknow encounter in September 2023, had accumulated vast tracts of land through coercion and illegal occupation over decades. Following his death, the state government moved swiftly to identify and take back properties that had been wrongfully seized from genuine claimants.
The rehabilitated families, many of whom were evicted from the land Atiq had appropriated, received fresh allotments through government land redistribution drives. Officials described the upcoming dual celebration — Diwali falling close to Prime Minister Modi's birthday on October 8 — as a powerful symbol of the community reclaiming its sense of security and belonging.
Local administrators have organized cultural programs and community feasts for the families. Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude toward the state government for restoring their livelihoods and providing them with legal documentation for the allotted plots. Many said the land they now occupy, previously held through force by Atiq's network, represents not just a roof over their heads but a renewed sense of pride and self-respect.
Political observers noted that the celebration also carries electoral resonance, with the ruling party framing the land rehabilitation as a key achievement of its governance agenda. Critics, however, have urged the government to ensure that the process of land allocation was transparent and free from political favoritism.
