A dispute over a farmer's suicide in Punjab's Sangrur district has spiralled into a fierce political battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party, with accusations of manipulation and violence flying from both sides.
The trouble began when local residents took to the streets after a man allegedly took his own life over a property-related dispute. Villagers expressed anger at what they described as inaction by local authorities and sought justice from the deceased's family. During this gathering, the convoy of Kewal Singh Dhillon, Punjab's BJP state president, passed through the area.
According to Dhillon, a group of AAP workers deliberately obstructed the BJP party's movement, forcibly stopping the vehicles and creating a hostile scene. He claimed that the AAP supporters not only blocked the road but also hurled abusive language and attempted to physically confront party members before the convoy could negotiate its way out of the village.
However, AAP has firmly rejected these allegations. The party asserts that it was ordinary villagers, not its workers, who confronted the BJP leaders. Sources close to AAP say the locals were already agitated over the suicide and unrelated political matter, and they simply asked the BJP delegation to address their grievances instead of passing through unchallenged.
The deceased's family has also entered the fray, alleging that the suicide was triggered by intimidation from local BJP leaders connected to the ruling government in Chandigarh. They have demanded a fair investigation and justice for their deceased relative, adding another layer of emotional weight to an already volatile situation.
This clash comes against a backdrop of sharply intensified political competition in Punjab, where the AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann faces a sustained challenge from the BJP, which is ramping up its organisational presence in the state. Incidents like this are likely to further harden rhetoric ahead of future electoral battles.
Police in the Sangrur district have registered a case related to the obstruction and are investigating the circumstances surrounding both the original suicide and the subsequent confrontation. Both parties have called on their workers to remain calm, but tensions remain high in the area.
