Officials from the Delhi Municipal Corporation moved in early Monday morning with excavators and manual labourers to tear down part of a neighbouring five-storey structure in Satya Niketan, an area close to the south campus of Delhi University. The targeted building, estimated to be around half a century old, was occupied as a boys' paying guest accommodation and was believed to have been constructed without valid permissions. Its partial demolition comes just a day after a nearly identical nearby building came crashing down on Sunday afternoon, drawing national attention to the fragile state of urban housing in the national capital.
The site itself remains a tense and active zone. Rescue teams had scrambled after Sunday's collapse, pulling survivors from the rubble under difficult conditions. Locals described the area as a narrow lane packed tightly with structures built right up to the property boundaries, leaving almost no room for emergency vehicles to reach the site quickly. That congestion has become a recurring problem across several parts of Delhi where informal settlements and unauthorised constructions crowd narrow bylanes.
Citizens and student groups in the university vicinity had long complained about the proliferation of illegally built hostels and PG accommodations that violate basic safety norms. These structures are often erected on tiny plots with minimal regard for earthquake resistance, structural integrity, or fire exits. Authorities have periodically launched drives to dismantle such buildings, but activists say enforcement remains uneven and many illegal constructions continue to operate openly.
The MCD has stated that the current demolition campaign is part of a broader, sustained effort to identify and remove structures deemed hazardous across the city. Officials declined to confirm whether anyone remained trapped inside the partially demolished building but said surveys are ongoing in adjacent blocks to assess structural risks. Residents in nearby lanes were asked to stay cautious and avoid the immediate area while machinery worked nearby.
