Mumbai: The Marathi film Gondhal has been selected as India's official entry for the 99th Academy Awards, organised by the Film Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The announcement has sent waves of excitement through the regional film industry, particularly among filmmakers and artists working in the Marathi cinema ecosystem.
Directed by an acclaimed filmmaker rooted in Maharashtra's rural storytelling tradition, Gondhal is set against the backdrop of a centuries-old traditional folk ritual practised in parts of rural Maharashtra known locally as Gondhal. The film explores the cultural and social fabric of village life, weaving together themes of devotion, community identity, and the tensions that arise when ancient customs collide with modern aspirations. Its narrative approach has drawn comparisons to several critically acclaimed Marathi films that have gained international recognition in recent years.
The selection was made by a high-powered screening and evaluation committee formed under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Out of thirty-three films submitted across various Indian languages, Gondhal stood out for its authentic representation of Maharashtrian culture, its artistic merit, and its potential to resonate with international audiences unfamiliar with the region's traditions.
This marks the fourth occasion that a Marathi-language film has earned an Oscar nomination or placement as India's official submission. Previous Marathi entries that gained prominence on the global cinematic stage include the films Sairat, Duniyadari, and Court — each contributing to building a growing international reputation for Marathi cinema as a carrier of meaningful, culturally rooted storytelling. Industry observers note that Gondhal's selection reinforces this trajectory.
The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 14, 2027, in Los Angeles. If Gondhal qualifies for the shortlist of five nominated films in the International Feature Film category, it will become only the second Marathi film in history to achieve that milestone after Court, which secured a nomination in 2015. Filmmakers, critics, and trade analysts across Maharashtra have welcomed the news, calling it a significant moment for Indian parallel cinema.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has confirmed that all procedural formalities for the overseas submission will be completed ahead of the academy's deadline.
