An 81-year-old man, Asghar Ali Vohra, who resides in Mira Road in Thane district of Maharashtra, has secured relief in a long-pending land dispute after the local BJP MP intervened and agreed to hand over possession of the contested property.
Vohra met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 8 and raised his grievances regarding the land dispute before him. He had sought the Prime Minister's intervention and also requested a CBI inquiry into the matter. Photographs of their meeting were subsequently shared widely on social media and by various news outlets.
Just eight days after that meeting, BJP MP Narendra Mehta confirmed that Vohra would be released from possession disputes over the land in question and that the construction permits linked to the property would be surrendered. The MP stated he would facilitate the process and ensure Vohra receives what is rightfully his.
Vohra has claimed that he once studied in the same class as Prime Minister Modi at the BN School in Vadnagar, Gujarat. This personal connection reportedly drew the Prime Minister's attention to his case, though no official statement has been made linking their past to the land dispute resolution.
The land in question has been mired in conflict for years, with competing claims between Vohra and other parties including the office of the MP. Local residents and supporters of Vohra have expressed hope that the outcome sets a positive precedent for how ordinary citizens can seek justice through direct engagement with leadership.
Legal experts note that while the political intervention has expedited the resolution, the formal transfer of possession and cancellation of permits will still require documentation and compliance with local municipal procedures.
