In a significant political development ahead of the West Bengal by-elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday that she has withdrawn the Trinamool Congress candidature from the Nandigram constituency and will instead throw her weight behind the Indian National Congress candidate.
The announcement came just 18 days before polling is scheduled, sending shockwaves through the political landscape of West Bengal. Sanchita Pradhan Das, the TMC candidate who had been nominated from Nandigram, formally withdrew her nomination papers in compliance with the party decision.
Mamata Banerjee held a press conference following the withdrawal, stating clearly that the TMC would support the Congress candidature from Nandigram. The decision appears to be the result of strategic calculations within the ruling dispensation, especially given the ongoing negotiations between the Trinamool Congress and the Indian National Congress regarding seat-sharing arrangements in the upcoming bypolls.
The Nandigram constituency saw its seat vacated when Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari resigned after being elected from the Raiganj constituency in the general election results. Shubhendu Adhikari, a close ally of Mamata Banerjee, met with the Chief Minister to discuss the situation before the final decision was taken.
On September 13, Mamata Banerjee had announced the names of two TMC candidates for the bypolls — Sanchita Pradhan Das from Nandigram and Rabikul Alam Chowdhury from the Rajnagar constituency. While Sanchita's name has now been withdrawn, Chowdhury remains in the field from Rajnagar and will continue his campaign as scheduled.
