Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in the Indian capital on Tuesday for a bilateral visit that carried added emotional weight following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in late 2024. Early in the day, Anwar paid floral tributes at Manmohan Singh's residence in South Delhi, joining other foreign dignitaries and Indian political figures who have come forward to honour the veteran economist and former prime minister, who served two terms leading India from 1991 to 2004.
Later in the day, the Malaysian premier held a meeting with Rahul Gandhi, the general secretary of the Indian National Congress and one of the most prominent opposition voices in the country. The discussions were understood to have covered the state of India-Malaysia bilateral relations, economic collaboration, and areas of mutual interest including trade, investment, and people-to-people connect. Representatives from both sides were present during the exchange.
India and Malaysia share deep historical and cultural linkages, with a significant Indian diaspora calling Malaysia home. The two nations have steadily strengthened their economic partnership in recent years, with Bilateral Trade reaching over $30 billion annually. Diaspora remittances and educational ties also form a vital part of the relationship.
Anwar's visit comes at a time when Malaysia has been seeking to diversify its economic partnerships across South Asia, while India continues to prioritise strengthening ties with Southeast Asian nations through its Act East Policy. The meeting with Rahul Gandhi reflects the engagement that Indian opposition leaders maintain with visiting foreign delegations, offering an alternative diplomatic channel alongside official government-to-government dialogue.
Anwar is expected to hold further meetings with Indian officials during his stay in the capital.
